This post is intended to provide one with a basic understanding of the differences between the various diamond certificates and the gemological labs which produce them. The reliability, accuracy and integrity of these labs can vary “greatly” from other certification currently circulating in the global market place …
Major diamond certification laboratories include the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Hoge Raad Voor Diamant (HRD), American Gemological Society (AGS), International Gemological Institute (IGI) and . These 4 diamond laboratories were formed to protect the public by providing independent evaluations of a diamond’s quality. Since then other not so reliable and not trust worthy diamond certificate are circulating… not worth the paper they are printed on.
Taking the big leap of faith with your better half is indeed a big step and will contribute towards your future in all kinds of ways. Inlaws, children, financial prudence and planning, etc all will play a big part. Once an individual has decided to propose and purchase a solitaire diamond, the next step is to look for a certified diamond which has been certified by only 4 of the most reputable and established diamond laboratories. Namely GIA, HRD, AGS and IGI
We have seen the emergence of many other diamond certifications in the market place globally and all of these only serve one single purpose: to serve the interests of the retailer. Simply put !
The grading standards for these “other” certifications are very liberal to say the least and they do NOT serve as a a true or genuine representation of the solitaire being purchased. The colour grading is 2-3 colours lower than stated on the certification and additionally, the clarity is not as indicated. Basically the client who is putting they trust in the jeweller is not being properly advised and only purchasing a diamond that is serving to ad a substantial margin for the retailer in question.
The big 4 (as we call them) are reliable players in the diamond industry, reputable and long established. and focus on the intrinsic values of the solitaire and properly represent the solitaire.
